STATIX for students and lecturers.
A student licence for one year: the online course and every STATIX calculator, with calc sheets and bending schedules for your projects and assignments. Apply on this page; we approve each application ourselves.
What students get
- The online courses Reinforced Concrete Design 1 (SANS 10100-1, eight lessons), Steel Design 1 (SANS 10162-1, seven lessons) Loads 1 (SANS 10160, six lessons) Foundations 1 (seven lessons), Detailing 1 (SANS 282, six lessons), Steel Design 2 (single-storey steel buildings, six lessons) and Timber and Masonry 1 (six lessons), with the worked examples, “Do it in STATIX”, exercises with answers and the quizzes.
- Every STATIX calculator with its full checks, calc sheet and SANS 282 bending schedule: concrete, steel and connections, foundations and geotechnics, loads.
- One year from the day we approve your application. Apply again after that while you are still studying.
- Every calc sheet, schedule and drawing you make is marked “Student licence - not for construction”. It is for learning, assignments and projects, not for real buildings.
The student licence does not include the project board, STATIX 2D for AutoCAD or STATIX 3D.
For lecturers
- Use the courses in your modules: Reinforced Concrete Design 1, Steel Design 1, Loads 1, Foundations 1, Detailing 1, Steel Design 2, Timber and Masonry 1, RC Design 2, RC Design 1 (Eurocode), Steel Design 1 (Eurocode), Steel Design 2 (Eurocode) and RC Design 2 (Eurocode). Each lesson has short theory with clause numbers, a worked example by hand, the same problem in a STATIX calculator, exercises and a quiz.
- Use the calculators in class and in tutorials: students change one input and see what it does to the design, with every check and its clause.
- Your students apply for their own student licence on this page.
- A department licence for a whole class is available by arrangement: contact us at info@statix.engineering.

The courses
Reinforced Concrete Design 1 to SANS 10100-1: eight lessons, each with learning outcomes, short theory, a worked example, the same problem in STATIX, exercises and a quiz.
Steel Design 1 to SANS 10162-1: seven lessons, from tension members to connections and column base plates. See the course.
Loads 1 to SANS 10160: actions and combinations, permanent and imposed loads, wind and the load take-down: six lessons. See the course.
Foundations 1: soils and bearing, pad, strip and combined footings, rafts, piles, pile caps and retaining walls. All seven lessons are online. See the course.
Detailing 1 (SANS 282): reading drawings, shape codes and cutting lengths, laps and cover, beams, columns, slabs, footings and walls, and the bending schedule end to end. All six lessons are online. See the course.
Steel Design 2: one single-storey steel building from layout to the last joint: load paths and bracing, purlins and girts, cold-formed sections, rafters and columns, the eaves haunch, the apex and the base. All six lessons are online. See the course.
Timber and Masonry 1: timber beams and floors by EN 1995-1-1 or SANS 10163-1, masonry walls under vertical and wind load by SANS 10164, and lintels. All six lessons are online. See the course.
RC Design 2: after RC Design 1, flat slabs and punching, post-tensioned slabs, walls, corbels and nibs, staircases, crack width and deflection by calculation, and slabs on grade. All seven lessons are online. See the course.
RC Design 1 (Eurocode): for departments that teach to the Eurocodes, the eight lessons of RC Design 1 on EN 1992-1-1 with EN 1990 combinations, on the Eurocode 2 route of the calculators. All eight lessons are online. See the course.
Steel Design 1 (Eurocode): the seven lessons of Steel Design 1 on EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1993-1-8, on the Eurocode 3 route of the steel calculators. All seven lessons are online. See the course.
Steel Design 2 (Eurocode): one single-storey steel building to the Eurocodes, from loads and bracing to the eaves haunch, the apex and the base, on the Eurocode routes of the calculators. All five lessons are online. See the course.
RC Design 2 (Eurocode): the seven lessons of RC Design 2 on EN 1992-1-1 with EN 1990 combinations, on the Eurocode 2 route of the concrete calculators: flat slabs and punching, post-tensioned slabs, walls, corbels and nibs, staircases, crack width and deflection, and slabs on grade. All seven lessons are online. See the course.
Each lesson's theory is open to everyone. The worked examples, exercises and quiz open with a student licence, a university or college email, or a calculator pack.
Questions
Who can apply?
Students registered at a university, university of technology or college, in civil or structural engineering or a related programme. We may ask for proof, such as a student card.
Do I need a university email address?
No, but it helps. With a university or college email we can usually approve you quickly. With another address, tell us your student number.
How long does approval take?
We read each application ourselves, usually within a few working days. You get an email when it is decided, and this page shows the status when you sign in.
Can I use it for real projects or holiday work?
No. Everything made with a student licence is marked “Student licence - not for construction”. Work for a client or an employer needs a calculator pack or a plan on a firm's account.
What happens after one year?
The licence ends and your account stays. If you are still studying, apply again on this page.
Is the project board or STATIX 2D included?
No. The student licence covers the online course and the calculators with their calc sheets and schedules. The project board, STATIX 2D and STATIX 3D are not included.
STATIX is a design aid. Check every result against the current code, and have any real design checked and signed by a registered professional engineer.
Be first to use STATIX 3D.
Leave your email and we will tell you when each part is ready for testing. One confirmation now, one message then. A short monthly update only if you tick the box.
