Steel Design 1 (SANS 10162-1)
Learn to design structural steel members and connections to SANS 10162-1. Each lesson has short theory with many sketches, a worked example by hand, the same problem in a STATIX steel calculator, exercises and a quiz.
Lessons
Lesson 1Tension membersGross yield, net fracture, shear lag in angles and block shear, by hand and in the steel member calculator.
Lesson 2Compression members and columnsBuckling, effective length, slenderness and the column curve; Cr about both axes, with a weak-axis brace.
Lesson 3Beams: bending, shear and lateral-torsional bucklingSection class, plastic moment, lateral-torsional buckling with Mcr and ω2, restraint, shear and deflection.
Lesson 4Combined axial force and bendingThe 13.8 interaction checks, amplification U1 and ω1, braced and unbraced members, tension with bending.
Lesson 5Bolted connectionsBolt shear and bearing, the eccentric bolt group, block failure, plate, web and welds of a fin plate.
Lesson 6Welded connectionsFillet weld strength and direction, weld groups under shear and moment, full-strength end plate welds.
Lesson 7Column base platesConcrete bearing and kj, plate thickness, pinned and moment bases, holding-down bolts and anchors, shear transfer.
Who it is for
- Students in civil and structural engineering.
- Graduate engineers working towards registration.
- Technologists who design or check steelwork.
- Draughtsmen and detailers who want to understand the members and connections they draw.
The STATIX calculators it uses
- Lessons 1 to 4: the steel member calculator (tension, compression, bending, lateral-torsional buckling and their interaction).
- Lessons 5 and 6: the fin plate and end plate connection calculators.
- Lesson 7: the base plate calculator.
How each lesson works
- Learning outcomes and what you need before you start.
- Short theory, with SANS clause numbers to look up in your own copy of the code.
- A worked example, every number shown step by step.
- The same problem in a STATIX calculator, so you can check your hand answer.
- Exercises with answers, a short self-check quiz and the lesson on one page.
Universities and colleges
Universities and colleges: one licence for the department; students sign in with their university email. Lecturers can use the lessons and the calculators in class and in tutorials.
Course material for learning, not a design. Check every value against the current code and your own project, and have the design checked and signed by a registered professional engineer.
