Steel Design 2 (Eurocode)

One portal frame building from layout to the last joint, to the Eurocodes: loads and bracing, cold-formed purlins and girts, rafters and columns as beam-columns, the eaves haunch, the apex and the base. It builds on Steel Design 1 (Eurocode) and uses the STATIX calculators on their Eurocode routes.

Lessons

Who it is for

  • Students and graduate engineers who have done a first steel course to the Eurocodes.
  • Engineers new to portal frames and cold-formed steel on Eurocode projects.
  • Engineers who know the SA codes: every lesson links its twin in Steel Design 2.

Before this course

It builds on Steel Design 1 (Eurocode) (members, bolts, welds and base plates) and does not repeat it.

Which values the lessons use

The lessons follow the calculators’ Eurocode routes with the recommended values: EN 1990 equation 6.10 with the partial factors of Table A1.2(B), the imposed roof load of EN 1991-1-1 Table 6.10, EN 1991-1-4 wind with co = 1 and ρ = 1.25 kg/m³, and the partial factors of EN 1993. Each lesson says which values it uses, so you can compare them with your own country’s annex.

The STATIX tools it uses

  • The wind load calculator (EN 1991-1-4).
  • The steel member calculator (EN 1993-1-1).
  • The eaves haunch and apex haunch calculators (EN 1993-1-8) and the base plate calculator (EN 1993-1-8 + EN 1992-4).
  • The cold-formed purlin and member calculators work to SANS 10162-2 only, so the cold-formed lesson works by hand to EN 1993-1-3.

How each lesson works

  • Learning outcomes and what you need before you start.
  • Short theory with many sketches, with clause numbers to look up in your own copy of the code.
  • Worked examples by hand, every number shown, checked against the STATIX calculators.
  • The same problem in a STATIX calculator, where it has a Eurocode route.
  • Exercises with answers, a short self-check quiz and the lesson on one page.

Universities and colleges

Universities and colleges: one licence for the department; students sign in with their university email. Lecturers can use the lessons and the calculators in class and in tutorials.
