Showcase · one portal frame

From the frame to every joint.

An 18 m steel portal frame: 4 bays of 6 m, 6 m eaves, 10° roof, UC254x73 columns, UB406x60 rafters with eaves and apex haunches, cold-formed purlins and girts, sag rods, wall and roof bracing. One model in STATIX: analysis, member design and connection design, with every check shown. These are the real results, not a mock-up.

The chain

One model, start to finish.

No forces typed from one program into the next. Each step reads the one before.

Step 1

Model, analysis and member design

The frame, its loads (dead, live, wind uplift, side wind, wind along the gable) and 5 load combinations in one 3D model. The analysis feeds the member design directly: columns, rafters and braces are checked to SANS 10162-1, the cold-formed purlins and girts by the direct strength method. Result: 131 member groups, none failing; the highest is a cold-formed girt at 90 %.

Step 2

Connection design on the same model

STATIX finds every joint in the solved frame and checks it with the member forces from every combination: haunches, base plates, purlin and girt cleats, sag rods, brace gussets and crossings, eaves struts and fly braces. 295 joint checks of 14 types, every one with its clause.

Step 3

Out to Advance Steel for detailing

The fabrication export takes the designed joints, plates, bolts and welds to Advance Steel: 267 joints, none skipped. The detailer starts from the checked design instead of redrawing it.
