Steel Design 2 (single-storey buildings)

One portal frame building from layout to the last joint: load paths and bracing, cold-formed purlins and girts, cold-formed sections, rafters and columns as beam-columns, the eaves haunch, the apex and the base. It builds on Steel Design 1 and uses the STATIX steel calculators.

Lessons

Who it is for

  • Students and graduate engineers who have done a first steel course.
  • Technologists who design or check light industrial buildings.
  • Engineers new to portal frames and cold-formed steel.

Before this course

It builds on Steel Design 1 (members, bolts, welds and base plates) and uses the wind loads of Loads 1. It does not repeat them.

How each lesson works

  • Learning outcomes and what you need before you start.
  • Short theory with many sketches, with clause numbers to look up in your own copy of the code.
  • Worked examples by hand, every number shown, checked against the STATIX calculators.
  • The same problem in a STATIX calculator.
  • Exercises with answers, a short self-check quiz and the lesson on one page.

Universities and colleges
