Free masonry wall calculator to SANS 10164-1 and SANS 10164-2
Checks a loadbearing masonry wall for vertical load and wind, and designs reinforced masonry: walls, columns, shear walls under racking, lintels and bond beams. Free, no install, with a calc sheet.
No install, no card. No account needed for the result; a free account opens 3 designs a month with every check and the calc sheet.
What the calculator checks.
Every check is shown with its clause and a pass or fail; the full calc sheet shows the working.
- Unreinforced walls: the characteristic strength from SANS 10164-1 Table 3, slenderness, eccentricity and the Table 8 capacity reduction factor, the vertical resistance, single leaf and cavity walls; BS 5628-1 and EN 1996-1-1 routes too
- Wind on the wall face: the SANS 10164-1 cl. 5.5 panel design from the supported edges (Table 10, precompression, limiting dimensions, cavity ties)
- Walls with openings: up to three windows or doors, split into the SANS 10164-1 Appendix F sub-panels (piers beside the openings, panels below and above), each checked for wind and drawn on the wall
- Reinforced walls (SANS 10164-2): axial load with out-of-plane bending by strain compatibility, slenderness, wind on the vertical span, deflection, cover, bar spacing and laps
- Reinforced columns: total axial load and moment, bars on two faces, links, slenderness and the small-area strength factor
- Reinforced shear walls: racking shear with the horizontal bars (7.5.1) and in-plane bending with the vertical bars (7.5.2), with the out-of-plane check alongside
- Lintels and bond beams: bending, shear and links, span/depth and deflection, anchorage and the end bearing on the masonry
Codes: SANS 10164-1 (unreinforced masonry), SANS 10164-2 (reinforced masonry), BS 5628-1, EN 1996-1-1 (Eurocode 6)

Short answers.
About this free calculator.
Is the masonry wall calculator free?
Yes. The design, every check and the result are free to use, signed in or not.
Do I need an account?
No account is needed to design: the checks and the result show on the page, with a summary calc sheet. A free STATIX account opens 3 designs a month with every check and the calc sheet. No card is asked for.
Does it design reinforced masonry?
Yes, to SANS 10164-2: reinforced walls, columns, shear walls under racking, lintels and bond beams. Construction control category I is required for reinforced masonry, as the code asks.
Which loads does a column take?
Total design loads: the axial load in kN with its eccentricity and an out-of-plane moment in kNm. The column self-weight goes into the axial load.
How is a shear wall checked?
Racking shear on the wall section against the masonry shear strength, with the horizontal bars taking the excess, and in-plane bending with the vertical bars along the wall (SANS 10164-2 7.5). The out-of-plane check of the same wall runs alongside.
